I suppose it’s oddly fitting that I’ve started the ‘about’ section when I’m already well into the blog itself. To be honest, I just forgot. Really, that’s why the whole back story to this has already been covered. Sorry. I put it in here:
So, I suppose, if that’s the back story, I might as well tell you about what I’m hoping to achieve with this, (that’s the ‘front story’). Firstly, I have no intention of writing a travel guide. There are already hundreds of entertaining and helpful ones out there, and if you want to know where to get the best Zapiekanka in Krakow, I guess, that’s probably where you should look, (it’s the main square in Kazimierz). No, this is intended to document my personal response to what I see and what I’m doing. I guess the general idea’s twofold; firstly, if I can get it right, and that’s a big ‘if’, (I’m no great writer) I’d like to give people a feel of what it’s like to be on this journey and subject to all the lows and the many highs to be found along the way. Secondly – and this is key – I just want to keep my own record of what happened and what it was like. I make no apologies for that. One day, with a little luck, I’m going to be old, grey and wanting something to look back on. This is that.
Another note. My plan is to be absolutely honest with you throughout. This includes up to and beyond the point of my own discomfort or vanity. As a species, we’re not always as noble as we might like, and falling short of our better ambitions is as human as opposable thumbs. The intention here is to document those shortfalls, just as much and just as fairly as anything else. Travel, Christ, life, is a human experience, and sometimes that includes the ugly and the venal. Thus far, some of the people who have read this blog have had the courage and good grace to call me out when they feel I’m being evasive, or skirting an issue. I’m grateful for that and I’d ask you to do the same; then I’ll be thankful to you, too.
I am also to refer you to these excellent blogs.
Firstly, there’s my friend Lisa Valentine’s site. As well as being a great friend, awesome referrer of commissions and giver of amazing hats, (see above) Lisa is also a stunningly talented writer. Whatever you do, whatever your job might be, you should commission her to do all kinds of brilliant things for you. Her rates are very reasonable.
Secondly, there’s my friend the photographer and journalist Paul Sutcliffe. You can get a sample of Paul’s work by going here. Paul is also available for hire and can be contacted through his website. The very observant amongst you may even spot a couple of pictures of me within his portfolio.
Freelancers stick together.
…and lastly, in gratuitously self serving fashion, there’s this: http://lazarou.bandcamp.com/ The link to the band I formed in Moscow. You should listen. We’re not awful.
So no, in summary, I’ve no real idea where we’re going or what it’s going to be like. If you’re interested in following events, then thank you. I hope I won’t let you down. If you think I’m dodging something, or not being as frank with you as you’d like, please, let me know. We all need a kick in the ass every now and then.
And finally, if you know a better place to get Zapiekanka in Krakow, please, get in touch.
